Customer-embedded engineers who turn enterprise software into working solutions.

Forward Deployed Engineers (FDEs) are a distinct and increasingly sought-after engineering archetype. Rather than building core product in a centralized engineering team, FDEs are embedded directly with customers, solving integration challenges, configuring software to fit complex operational environments, and building custom solutions on top of a vendor's platform. Palantir popularized the model; today it's widespread across defense tech, enterprise AI, and B2B software companies. Recruiting FDEs is meaningfully different from recruiting traditional software engineers because the skills required extend well beyond code.

FDE roles blur the line between software engineer, solutions consultant, and technical account manager. When a hiring manager says "we need someone who codes but also talks to customers," probe what "talks to customers" actually means. Some FDE roles are 80% engineering with occasional presentations; others are 60% relationship management with scripting support. The ratio changes the ideal candidate profile (and the comp structure) significantly.
